This qualification (CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care) reflects the role of workers in a range of early childhood education settings who work within the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations and the National Quality Standard. This course is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
There are no formal pre-requisites in the training package for course entry, however ACSE sets a number of its own entry requirements.
- Be aged 18 years or over
- Candidates must demonstrate Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills in line with AQF qualification level. ACSE will conduct an LLN Test before enrolment.
- The candidate must be able to fulfill the work placement requirements of the course in a regulated education and care service facility. Work placement requirements will be discussed with all candidates’ pre-enrolment. ACSE will organise work placement through its network with Early Childhood Education and Care Providers as well as Family Day Care Providers.
- All students will be required to have completed the unit HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting before starting vocational placement.

A mixed delivery mode is employed including workplace and face to face training that will take place in ACSE training venues and live work sites, facilitated under Training venue lease arrangements. Face to face training classes will be restricted to a maximum of 15 candidates.
ACSE will use commercial fee for hire training venues on a regular basis in established locations, close to public amenities and transport.

The Mount Druitt Hub, Ayers Grove, Mt Druitt, Sydney, NSW. ACSE have a signed agreement for use of the training facilities on a commercial hire basis as required. The facility has fully equipped training rooms, recreational areas, disability access and is close to all amenities and the Mt Druitt train station.
Candidates are provided with an induction to the course to outline the learning and assessment processes, support services (Support Services Directory) and other relevant information.
Summary of delivery arrangements

The learning and assessment materials for the remaining units of competencies will be given to candidates in hardcopy.
- Candidates will be informed of which reading to undertake in preparation for face to face sessions and which formative activities need to be completed away from class. Candidates are required to respond to assessment activities, which are issued at the beginning of each unit. These assessment activities are required to be completed or conducted at scheduled times during the program.
- Candidates will also be provided with a list of reference materials that can also be accessed to develop their knowledge.
- Candidates are encouraged to contact their Trainer/Assessor at any time via email, even outside of class times.
- Trainers may contact candidates via Skype, Google Hang Outs, e-mail, phone and in person.
- Candidates will have access to a Family Day Care environment for the duration of their studies. They will be able to learn on the job and apply the knowledge gained from the text books, through interactions with trainers and the knowledge and skills developed through face to face training.
- Assessors will also visit candidates in the workplace to demonstrate how to complete activities, discuss concepts, approaches to difficulties the client may be experiencing in the workplace, answer questions, conduct any required assessment and generally provide support.
- Face to face training will be provided one day per week.
- Candidates are provided time in between face to face sessions and assessment to apply knowledge and skills to the workplace and consolidate learning.
- Trainers will liaise with candidates regarding progress and provide advice on how to prepare for assessment.
The following techniques are employed during face to face delivery depending on the subject matter:
- Power point presentations
- Iindividual tasks
- case studies
- research
- role plays and practical demonstrations
- group work and projects.
The context of the simulated workplace environment will be incorporated into delivery methodologies and candidates complete tasks to appropriate workplace standards.
The face to face classes will focus on one unit of competency. Candidates have the opportunity to learn and apply the same knowledge, concepts and skills in a variety of contexts over several weeks before being required to demonstrate competency in an assessment.
Before classes, candidates will read the learning material to develop knowledge and understanding. This includes a mixture of theoretical information and formative activities. Learner Guides include sufficient information for the candidates to acquire knowledge, undertake practice activities and complete tasks. Candidates will be provided support via telephone, video access and e-mail by our trainers.
Trainers will also contact candidates on a regular basis to provide support and assistance outside of scheduled face to face classes. During the contact your trainer will provide support and encouragement and discuss:
- relevant course content and concepts
- learning opportunities
- feedback on submissions
- any issues the student is experiencing
- assessment requirements
- student progress
- course delivery schedule
- work placement related matters
During workplace delivery and/ or work placement, candidates practice applying the relevant knowledge and skills in the workplace when completing job/ role activities. Candidates develop their knowledge and skills through performing workplace tasks that relate to the relevant units of competency and also complete learning activities in their own time. Candidates are provided guidance, instruction and feedback by workplace supervisors on their competency in performing workplace tasks. Trainers liaise with workplace supervisors to ascertain levels of competence where appropriate. Trainers will, also arrange visits to the workplace to provide instruction, support and for assessment purposes.
The trainer may provide additional learning material where gaps are identified in the participant’s underpinning knowledge. Training staff will take all feasible steps to adjust delivery methodologies and materials to cater for individual learning needs.
The course duration is 52 weeks, with 40 weeks of face-to-face class-based delivery and 12 weeks of breaks.
Vocational work placement is included in the course duration with 200 hours of work placement (WP).
Breakdown of WP:
Candidates enrolled in a Family day care stream:
- 120 hours at a Child Care Centre
- 80 hours at a Family Day Care Service
Candidates enrolled in Child Care Centre stream:
- 200 hours at a Child Care Centre (Early Childhood Education and Care Service)
Candidates must undertake work placement of 200 hours as part of this course. ACSE recommends that candidates undertake the work placement after completing the First Aid, WHS and Legislative units, to give them a basic skillset that allows them to safely commence placement.
Each organisation where candidates will satisfy the work placement requirements of this course will be undertaken in an education and care service regulated by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). It is envisaged that initially, the majority of candidates undertaking this course at ACSE will already be employed as assistant educators in a Family Day Care Service. ACSE has structured the WP component of 80 hours in a Family Day Care Service and 120 hours of WP at an Education and Care Service.
ACSE will assist non-employed candidates in securing a work placement in a regulated Education and Care Service.
Each workplace will provide opportunities for the candidate to observe, develop and practise the required skills under the supervision of a qualified workplace Supervisor. Trainers will also provide opportunities for the candidate to observe, develop and practise the required skills either in the workplace, classroom and/ or simulated workplace environment.
ACSE will provide candidates and their workplace Supervisor with an agreed, Learning and Assessment plan that indicates the purpose of the work placement and the minimum requirements for training and assessment in the specified units of competency. The plan will also clearly identify training, monitoring and assessment roles and responsibilities of both parties. The workplace Supervisor and Trainer/ Assessor will support the client and monitor their performance against the agreed criteria in the Learning and Assessment Plan.
Summary of work placement arrangements
- ACSE will assist in this process to secure a regulated education and care facility in which to undertake the work placement
- A work placement agreement will be negotiated, agreed and documented between the candidate, the ECEC Provider/FDC Provider and ACSE
- ACSE will confirm the availability of babies and/ or toddlers and children of the required age to satisfy unit of competency requirements prior to each placement commencing.
- The work placement agreement will contain all work placement arrangements and responsibilities outlined. Supporting documentation is employed for each party to outline their roles and responsibilities.
- All parties must agree to undertake the identified roles and responsibilities prior to the commencement of the work placement. ACSE will support the Trainers, Candidates and Supervisors in completing their roles.
- Candidates commence their work placement at the agreed dates/ times.
- Candidates are supervised by the work placement supervisor.
- Candidates are provided opportunities to observe, develop and practise applying the relevant knowledge and skills under the supervision of a qualified workplace Supervisor.
- Assessors liaise with candidates and workplace supervisor at agreed times throughout the placement to monitor course progress.
- Assessors provide support to candidates via telephone, e-mail and in person when visiting the client at placement.
- Assessors visit each candidate 3-4 times throughout the course duration.
- Candidates may contact their assessor at any time to seek support and advice.
- Candidates are provided opportunities to consolidate and apply knowledge, understanding and skills prior to Summative assessment. Formative assessment opportunities are provided prior to Summative assessment.
- Opportunities for re-assessment are provided.
- Work placement documentation includes the Supervisors Workplace Logbook and Student Attendance Logbook.

To successfully complete the course, you will be required to submit a range of formative and summative assessment items at pre-determined intervals where possible. These include:
- Underpinning Knowledge reading and written responses
- Case study reading and written responses
- Journal and Ledger entry workbooks
- Practical projects
- Demonstration or observation (via video submission or digital media, mainly for RPL applicants)
- Presentation (via video submission as an alternative assessment mechanism)
Assessment is used to provide candidates with feedback on their progress and to measure their skills and knowledge against the training qualification requirements.

Candidates who obtain a competent result for all 15 core units and any 3 electives will receive CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
or
Candidates who do not obtain a competent result in the 15 core units and any 3 electives will receive a Statement of Attainment in CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care for the units they obtain competency provided the candidate has completed the required/relevant work placement assessment and hours for that particular unit of competency.
Based on successful completion of LLN test for AQF level 5, there is a direct pathway into the CHC50113 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. Candidates can also receive up to 14 units of Credit Transfer toward the diploma from CHC30113.
